RAID Data Recovery
Bad RAID Parity

What happens when RAID Parity goes bad?

There are various serious problems when parity goes wrong. There will be failure of the drive under RAID 1 to 6 levels. The failed drive can be replaced which in turn requires heavy cost. The other effects when RAID parity goes wrong are it can affect the RAID array controller which will regenerate the data on the new drive using the parity information from the other drives and is used to restore fault tolerance. The RAID parity provides protection against the of drive failure, if it encounter a parity error, it will starts writing a bad data on the drive.

There are very less possibilities of data to be corrected, if it is not possible, then it is a time to load the data of a backup tape. When you open a file and run an application, the file will not open because the application has crashed. If your application is lost or crashed you may get an error message, which may tell due, to bad parity the application has got crashed and need to be taken advance step in order to protect the other application from getting into crash. These are the problem reading from the disk. There are other problems which may cause due to the bad performance of the parity that is data on the disk is read in one sweep. When a parity error is detected, the data is reread to get it right. When parity goes wrong the major disadvantage seen is that the, errors can be generated which can be due to the number of factors which is regarding to the failed disk.

The major cause of parity going wrong is that, if the drive cables are not properly connected to the cable being used parity errors may occur. If at all you find a significant number of parity errors, change the cables and test the controller card to make sure it is good or gone bad. Also check the terminators as well check for any loose contacts. RAID controllers can be used for troubleshooting, so be sure to make good use of any of these packages as well. You should find the physical connections of the devices to determine if there is any source of the parity problems. Make it sure that you are using the right cable and the connectors as specified by the SCSI Trade Association terms and specifications. Most internal cables have large number of individual wires running through the ribbon. If even one of those wires is exposed, shorting out, cut, or not fully attached to the connector on the end, it may create data transfer problems. Finally we can prevent the parity from working wrong is by making sure whether the cable is properly connected to both the controller card and the drive line up all the pins on the connector.

The job of testing a controller card is a more difficult because error present in the card is not easily gets detected. The precautions are to be taken during system installation for certain servers; care should be taken from writing the utilities to a small partition on a disk array. These utilities are programs that test the array controller run programs of the system during the boot time.

When you open a file and run an application, the file will not open because the application has crashed. The headache disadvantage of parity going wrong is that it will effect the application. The application gets lost or crashed due to bad parity so we have to take a precautionary step in order to prevent the parity from going wrong.
