Types of Data Loss in RAID

The purpose of the implementation of the RAID is mainly for the data loss. Hence to avoid the fault occurrence; the RAID servers are mostly used. But even in the RAID systems the data loss or data crash can occur. And hence the types of data loss are discussed below:

Data loss due to power failure or corruption:

The data loss can also happen due to the fact that a power failure occurred while some important transactions were taking place in the system repository. Hence this type data loss can also occur. The data can also be corrupted due to the mishandling of the data. Then in such cases it should be avoided by using a type of file system known as the journaling file system. There are actually two types of the journaling mechanisms that can be applied. They are journaled user's data, and journaled meta-data. The data if important can be backed up regularly to prevent such a loss. The backing up of data just prevents the resulting loss of data and avoids in the loss in the business. But it cannot guarantee the data loss prevention in the same location of the data.

Complete Disk Drive Failure:

Another type of data loss is due to the total failure of the disk drive; also termed as the "complete disk failure". This is mainly due to the physical damage that is sustained by the computer system. The major disadvantage is that the RAID data recovery is dependent on the physical state of such damaged media. This may happen due to the crashing of the read head in the hard disk platter. The failure could be any thing from the physical level damage to any complex logical damage of the data.

Data loss due to intentional behavior or accidental data loss:

This is also one of the important data loss types. And the severity can be considered as the most important. This is also one of the major causes for the data loss. This may be done by any human even by the carelessness by the user himself. This also includes files that are corrupted or erased by the hackers. Even the data loss of this type can occur in the RAID. The user must take care of the challenges posed by this type of attack. In all the other cases of the data loss there is technicality in the avoidance of the data loss; but in this case the data loss is due to the human error. Hence care should be taken to handle the sensitive data carefully. And provisions should be made to provide security for the data.

Bad Sectors:

This is considered as the most common type of the disk drive failure. In starting this appears to be very slow but gains momentum and eats up the memory of the hard disk. If the data is once written to such a bad sector then it cannot be read. The surface scan on the disk surface can provide little relief but takes up a huge time to recover that data which is actually written over it. But in the mean time; it consumes a lot of space. The data is almost lost in such a situation. Most of the operating System provides support to such type of disk drive failures, but that to a given extent. The location of the disk sector is just patched and it cannot be used any further.
