RAID on Storage Area Network
Home > Storage Area Network SAN

SAN is also a network that is widely practiced over the RAID systems. Mainly the SAN provides the services for the storage devices such as RAID servers. This SAN is especially used for the networking of the storage devices. The abbreviation of the SAN stands for the Storage Area Network. Hence the name does the justice for the purpose of which it is used.

The main purpose of the SAN is to connect the different storage systems such as the array of the disk system controllers and the tape library servers etc. By the definition of the SAN that is the Storage Area Network; It has a distinguished property from the other storage networks. Because the feature of the low level blocks storage access method utilized here.

The traffic caused by the data in a network is almost same as that in any other network. The example of which can be provided as the ATA and the SCSI etc. The ATA and the SCSI are also the different storage media which can be connected over a medium. But these are primarily the internal disk drives that are used for the storage of the data. Consider the example in a server that can be used for the comparison of the file storage system.

The file storage access method is used here. The file storage access method is similar to that of the NFS that is the Network File Storage system etc. Generally the SAN storage systems utilize the communication properties of the SCSI communication protocols uses for the communication over the network.

The SCSI communication protocols use the same features to connect to the storage access data base. This data base is usually over the network. Also the most notable thing is that they never utilize the physical interfaces that are at the lower level. Hence the importance is noticeable for the SAN. Generally a SAN can be considered as an extension of the direct attached storage terminology. The DAS or the Direct Attached Storage is the link like the point to point in between a server and the storage device connected to the server over a network. The important feature or the property of the SAN is that it allows access to many storage devices over a network. More over these storage devices are even sharable.

SAN or the Storage Area Network has many exciting features and most of them include the listed below: They are the support for the disk mirroring, archiving and retrieving of the archived data, backup and restoration of the data, and the sharing of data and data migration from one storage device to another. Every thing mentioned here is done in the environment where there are many network servers located.

The Storage Area Network also has the feature to incorporate the subnets or the sub networks that are the small networks or the part of a large network. This can be even done along with the other type of network that is the NAS also known as the Network Attached Storage. These networks can be centralized or decentralized. In the centralized systems there is one server and that server is a dedicated one. The decentralized system is also known as the distributed system. Most the Fibre Channels and the SCSI switches are used here to connect to the nodes of the different networks. The concept in the SAN and the NAS is almost similar and they usually fall under the one category of the networks.
